So, I haven’t posted in a while, but I had to spell the word liaison for work (yea! I have a job! like a real big-girl 9-5), and I had to look it up because it was spelled so weird.
As you may have guessed, yes, it’s a French word, but it’s REALLY old. Like 1600s old.
1640–50; < French, Old French < Latin ligātiōn- (stem of ligātiō ) a binding. See ligation
It’s that extra I in there that makes this word so difficult to spell: As Jenni says “imagine the A is getting a hug from 2 Is!”
Also, it comes from a binding. If someone is your liaison, they bind 2 groups together. Also a liaison is an “illicit affair”–a binding of a different sort, <raised eyebrows>
